New requirement for dental facilities administering sedation

Sedation permits and individual authorizations required by July 1, 2025

Friday, May 30, 2025

The PEIDC Council recently approved a new standard of practice on the use of sedation (including minimal sedation) and general anesthesia in dental practice. This follows consultation with dentists, external consultants and experts.

Effective July 1, 2025, all PEI Dental College registrants administering sedation, including nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation and oral minimal sedation, must have authorization from the PEIDC to do so.

This new requirement consists of two components:

Authorization to practice sedation for individual registered members

All registered members practicing sedation of any kind must provide proof of completed relevant education component. To do this:

  1. Log into your HMS profile
  2. On your dashboard, click/tap Education, and under Exams / Certifications / Special Authorizations, click/tap the Update This Information button
  3. Click/tap the edit icon next to the applicable sedation type
  4. Enter the date of completion and upload the supporting document
  5. The registrar will review the document and, if satisfied with the submitted information, approve your entry
  6. Upon approval, you will be listed on this website as authorized to practice the specific type of sedation

Facility Sedation Permit for dental facilities

All dental facilities practicing sedation must apply for a facility sedation permit. There are two permit levels:

  • Level 1 - nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation only - application fee: $150
  • Level 2 - parenteral moderate, or deep sedation/general anesthesia - application fee: $300

Each dental facility must select the primary contact—a general dentist or dental specialist— who will apply for the permit on the facility's behalf. All practitioners listed in the facility application must be authorized to practice the specific type of sedation indicated for them on the form.

All applications must be submitted and fees paid by June 30, 2025.
